Broken Lamp actively seeks to highlight artists kicking and punching their way out of mainstream formations and racial cliches. We’re enlightened by the strange shape of Mathambo emerging on the indie scene’s messy landscape.
The video, directed and shot by Pieter Hugo, musters a thrilling juxtaposition of Western and African culture by incorporating televized stereotypes. Shots of young African girls in traditional wear and half-clothed African boys mimicking the familiar images of charity appeal adverts seems to slur; ‘There’s more to us than television taught you to think’.
‘Control’ may sound like it’s blaring through a broken speaker wire, but that’s what makes it so great; the crushed, pixelated sounds create an interesting fusion of dub step and electronica that pricks your ears in remarkable ways.
After a few listens, you begin to forgive Mathambo for stealing lyrics from Joy Divison and understand the quirky meaning behind his adaptation.
Watch out for this guy, he has a megaphone.

Basement Jaxx have released a phenomenal new album. All their greatest hits, plus more, have been adapted and acoustically remade by the Metropole Orchestra. These guys are kings of avant-garde movements.

We here at Broken Lamp value the art of seeing, dreaming and then adapting raw rock into hard beauty.
This modern 2,100 square-foot loft apartment is the brain child of designer Steven Volpe. The San Fransico property has been re-born from a dead and dying warehouse into a city line gem stone. The results are breath-taking.

Sfgirlbybay - her official internet name - is one of those dangerously talented busy bodies. Her photography is particularly interesting and carries a bold edge that makes for delightful aesthetic pleasure.

Masha Rumyantseva’s careful choice of subjects create witty and insightful scenes. Using collages as a medium can be a sharp stab at the popular culture; Rumyantseva is using the ‘art’ of others to create her own. - BL

These stills are from the breath-taking short movie directed by Adam Bolland. Although less than 30 seconds in length, the 27 second feature is intriguing and meticulously designed. Graphic effects by Umeric!

Adam Ellison’s work is a breath of fresh air. His images manage to incorporate deep political messages in a playful and approachable manner. The above conveys Ellison’s feelings about child soldiers. We wanna print off his designs and slap them in a sandwich and eat ‘em. They’re tasty. - BL

It’s wonderful when some wizard of an artist takes a category of art & re-invent it like she’s God with six busy days ahead. It’s even more wonderful when a little Swiss pop-artist called Sylvie Fleury can collaborate with the giants of capitalism too.. And we mean giants (cough, Louis Vuitton, cough, Dom Perignon, cough Swarovski, cough, choke). Sadly, BROKENLAMP’s blog ethics include the ‘only one photo per post’ rule, but you’re more than welcome to find out more about Fleury.. Immediately. THAT’S AN ORDER.

Now ain’t that how every kitchen should look? We here at BROKENLAMP fantasize about the idea of living in a neat, minimalistic cardboard box. We think we’ve met our match.com and we’re impressed.
The layout of the house is compact but due to it’s strong emphasis on transparency, the illusion of fluidity and spaciousness has been created.
Okay, that’s great. When can we move in? - BL

Seven Hotel in Paris indulges in the kind of kitsch that steals hearts.
Yes, it is very white (no muddy feet please). Yes, it’s very tender (bring a silk dressing gown). And yes, you’ll probably end up spending more time in the hotel room rather than lingering around Parisian sights.
If you think that’s likely to happen, we recommend that you bring someone worth hibernating with.
